About this experience

The 5-kilometre round-trip Final Beach Walk near Cape Schanck in the Mornington Peninsula National Park promises stunning views and a workout that'll make your legs question your life choices. Although it’s not Everest, the stairs will still have you earning that post-walk coffee.

What to Expect

  • Picnic Perfection: You’ll begin at the Fingal Picnic Area, which is kitted out with electric barbecues, toilets, tables and even a ball games area. It’s perfect for a pre-walk warm-up or post-walk laze.
  • Scenic Lookouts: As you follow the trail, you’ll enjoy breathtaking views over basalt cliffs and down to Fingal Beach. It’s best visited at low tide when the beach is fully exposed and camera-ready.
  • Stairway to (Beach) Heaven: Eventually, you’ll reach a steep staircase leading down to the beach. Going down feels like a breeze, but the return climb is a leg day special.
  • Extended Adventures: If you’re still feeling energetic, you can extend your hike toward Gunnamatta Beach, which adds more coastline, more steps, and more opportunity to question your choices.

Good to Know

  • Difficulty: This one’s a moderate walk. While not a full-on hike, you’ll still feel it in the thighs—especially on the return stairs.
  • Facilities: There are toilets, picnic tables and barbecues at the Fingal Picnic Area, so you can refuel after your mini adventure.
  • Safety: The beach is unpatrolled and waves can be wild. So yes, you can swim—but it’s at your own risk (and definitely not recommended if you’re not confident in surf).
  • Nature vibes: You’ll spot plenty of native flora and fauna along the way. Keep your eyes open for lizards, birds, and maybe a snake or two (don’t worry, they usually keep to themselves).
  • No dogs allowed: Sadly, your furry mate has to stay home for this one. It’s a protected area, so no pups permitted.
